Born in Massachusetts, Halsey was living and farming in Warren, Michigan when he enlisted as a private in Company A, 22nd Michigan Infantry in August 1862. He was promoted to corporal in January 1863. Captured at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863, Halsey spent 15 months as a prisoner of war in Richmond and Danville, Virginia, Andersonville, Georgia, and Florence, South Carolina.
